The team behind Thrust SSC, the first supersonic car, are looking to break the 1000-mile-per-hour barrier with Bloodhound.
There have been two especially dramatic periods in land-speed-record history; the inter-war records set by Malcolm Campbell and rivals, which pushed wheel-driven cars as far as the day’s technology would take them, and the jet-age sixties rush brought in by Craig Breedlove and Spirit of America.
Now, with Bloodhound and the North American Eagle both aiming for over 800mph, we could be about to enter a third.
